What L2R Volunteers did in 2011:
In 2011 we sent 18 UK volunteers to work in 5 towns and villages in the West of Romania.
A team from Scotland returned to the little village of Mihaiesti in Hunedoara County. The tiny church of only 35 elderly members and had a heart for children’s work but had few resources. This was the second year that Christian musician Yvonne Lyon had led a team in the village. Their work has helped to inspire a number of younger Christians to take the work forwards and there have now been regular children’s groups meeting in the village for over two years.
We sent a team for the first time to work with the Church in Valeni. Simon Cooper from Kidderminster led the British team in this small village to deliver an exciting programme of teaching, craft and games to help them to engage with the Bible. The team were supported by local Christians led by Vlad, who was an excellent translator and helped to organise the Romanian team and make sure everything went smoothly. By the end of the week over 70 children had invited Jesus into their lives. Simon and the team then went on for a second week in Petrila, in the Carpathian Mountains. Again supported by Vlad, where over 100 children enjoyed their programme.
St Johns, Guildford provided two teams of volunteers. One team went to the town of Saliste on the edge of the Cindrel Mountains to the East of the Transylvania Plateau. The team worked in the EBHIS centre which is a Christian charity providing support for the local community and they were supported by a team of Romanian volunteers who traveled several hours from Peceiu to share in this work.
The next week the second Guildford team went to Pecieu, near Zalau, to work with the same team of Romanian volunteers in their own village. One of our volunteers amazed the children by showing them how to unicycle! We are still not quite sure how he got it into his luggage, but he did and it was a great hit.
